XylaMed™ Injection

XylaMed™ is an injection used as sedative and analgesic in horses and may also be used as a muscle relaxant.  

*XylaMed™ is a controlled substance medication in the following states: OH & WV.  All electronically prescribed orders shipping to these states will require secondary verbal or fax authorization with the prescriber prior to dispensing.

XylaMed™ Injection should be use as directed by your veterinarian. Use aseptic techniques when withdrawing each dose to decrease the possibility of post-injection bacterial infections. Adequately clean and disinfect the stopper prior to entry with a sterile needle and syringe. Injectable medications require needles and syringes.  Those items are purchased separately.  Please ask your veterinarian for a recommendation for the correct needle/syringe sizes for your pet. Use only sterile needles/syringes and use each needle/syringe only once. Dispose the needle/syringe immediately in a proper sharps disposal container. Sharps containers are sold separately.

Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give 2 doses at once.

XylaMed™ can cause occasional slight muscle tremors, bradycardia with partial A-V heart block and a reduced respiratory rate. Movement in response to sharp auditory stimuli may be observed and sweating.

The following drugs can potentially interact with XylaMed™:  acepromazine, chloramphenicol, CNS depressants, epinephrine, reserpine, and Buscopan. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.  

Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication you are giving to your pet.  Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, even if a drug interaction may occur. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely. 

Do not use in conjunction with tranquilizers. Not for human use. 

Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform Vetsource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic. Symptoms may include but are not limited to: swollen lips, tongue, face, airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; widespread hives and itching.

Store at 68°F to 77°F in controlled room temperature. Do not freeze. Keep this medicine out of reach of children. Store in a childproof container. Store this medicine in a cool, dry place at room temperature. Store away from heat and direct sunlight. Do not store this medicine in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink or in damp places. The medicine may break down if exposed to heat or moisture.
