Usage
Dormosedan® Injection can be administered either by intravenous (IV) or by intramuscular (IM) injection into your horse. Follow your veterinarian’s instructions for use. Use aseptic techniques when withdrawing each dose to decrease the possibility of post-injection bacterial infections. Adequately clean and disinfect the stopper prior to entry with a sterile needle and syringe. Injectable medications require needles and syringes. Those items are purchased separately. Please ask your veterinarian for a recommendation for the correct needle/syringe sizes for your pet. Use only sterile needles/syringes and use each needle/syringe only once. Dispose the needle/syringe immediately in a proper sharps disposal container. Sharps containers are sold separately.
Missed Doses
Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give 2 doses at once.
Side Effects
Side effects may include increased sweating, ataxia in the first 3-5 minutes after injection (unstable/uncoordinated movement) salivation, decreased body temperature, decreased respiratory rate, decreased heart rate, increased frequency of urination, increased nasal discharge, slight edema (swelling) of head area, congestion in mucous membranes, and potential for slight and temporary changes in conductivity of cardiac muscle. Contact your veterinarian if any of these effects are troubling for your horse. Take proper precautions during sedation and as your horse emerges from the sedating effects of the drug. Note: Although sedated, some horses may still respond to external stimuli with defensive movements (kicking, etc). Incoordination and staggering may be seen during the first 3-5 minutes after injection, until the horse has secured a firm footing. The following reactions are rare, but if your horse experiences an allergic reaction such as irregular breathing, rash, fever, and unresolved puffiness and swelling around the face contact your veterinarian immediately.
Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.
Drug & Food Interactions
The following drugs can potentially interact with detomidine: other alpha-2 agonists (dexmedetomidine, xylazine) and sulfonamides (SMZ TMP DS, Equi-sul SDT). Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.
Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication or supplements you are giving to your pet. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, even if a drug interaction may occur. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely.
Cautions
Protect treated horses from temperature extremes and withhold food and water until the sedative effects wear off. Depending on the dose used, effects may last from 30-90 minutes. Do not use in horses with cardiovascular disease, AV or SA block, respiratory, liver, or kidney disease, or conditions of shock or stress due to extreme weather. This product should not be used in breeding horses since the potential risk has not been assessed in either stallions or mares. Intended for use only in horses at least 1 year of age. Medication has not been evaluated for use in ponies, miniature horses, breeding, pregnant, or lactating horses. In case of an accidental skin exposure to a human, wash skin with soap and water and remove contaminated clothing. The product is poorly absorbed through skin but may be easily absorbed orally and via mucous membranes. Take proper precautions to ensure that accidental exposure via injection is avoided.
Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform VetSource and your veterinarian if your horse has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your horse displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic. Symptoms may include but are not limited to: swollen lips, tongue, face, airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; widespread hives and itching.
