Usage
Albuterol Sulfate HFA should be administered via inhalation as directed by your veterinarian. Please consult your veterinarian before making any changes or discontinuing the prescribed dosing schedule.
A delivery device (spacer) appropriate for the size and species of the treated animal should be used with this inhaler.
This medication is a “rescue” inhaler intended for intermittent treatment of acute respiratory conditions (e.g., asthma attacks).
For general inhaler use:

Ensure the inhaler is primed as detailed in the manufacturer patient information leaflet. Shake well before each use.
Ensure the facemask of the delivery device is placed snugly over your pet’s muzzle/nostrils.
Actuate the inhaler to release a puff of medication and allow your pet to take 7 to 10 breaths before removing the facemask.
Albuterol Sulfate HFA has a counter attached to the canister. After initial priming, the counter starts at 200 and counts down each time a spray is released. The correct amount of medication in each actuation cannot be assured after the counter reads 0, even though the canister may not be completely empty and continue to operate.
Discard the inhaler when the counter reads 0 or before the manufacturer expiration date, whichever comes first.
Missed doses
Administer the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place at a controlled room temperature (59 to 77°F). Store the inhaler upright with the mouthpiece down and out of the reach of children and pets. Store away from heat, freezing temperatures, and direct sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in damp places. The medicine may break down if exposed to heat or moisture.
The canister is pressurized and should not be punctured. Do not store or use near heat or open flames. Exposure to temperatures above 120°F may cause the canister to burst. Do NOT discard the canister into a fire or incinerator.
Side effects
Side effects are usually mild with this inhaled medication, though they are generally considered uncommon. Possible side effects include (but may not be limited to): increased heart rate, trembling/tremors, stimulation/nervousness, and dizziness. Systemic side effects associated with oral and injectable beta-2 agonists are less likely to occur with this inhaled medication.
Contact your veterinarian immediately if your pet has a seizure; shows aggressive or threatening behavior; appears overly anxious or agitated; excessive vomiting; rapid/excessive breathing or panting; or displays atypically low energy levels.
Notify your veterinarian if your pet experiences any of the effects described above, or if you notice any other side effects that are persistent or troublesome.

Precautions
This medication should only be used for intermittent rescue therapy and is NOT intended for long-term treatment of chronic respiratory conditions.
Use with caution in animals with a history of epilepsy/seizures, diabetes, high blood pressure, glaucoma, low potassium levels (hypokalemia), hyperthyroidism, or heart disease/arrhythmias.
Safe use of this medication has not been established and should be used with caution in breeding, pregnant, or lactating animals. Discuss the risks of using this medication with your veterinarian if your pet is in one of these groups.
Do not administer to animals with a known history or suspected allergy/hypersensitivity to any beta-2 agonist drug, including this medication or any of its ingredients. Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform Vetsource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies.
If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, discontinue therapy and call your veterinarian immediately or seek emergency veterinary attention. Symptoms may include (but are not limited to): swollen lips, tongue, face, or airways, difficulty breathing, agitation, profuse salivation, and widespread hives or itching.
Drug and food interactions
Inhaled medications are not absorbed into the body in the same manner as oral or injectable drugs. While interactions with inhaled medications may still occur, the extent and magnitude of these interactions is generally unclear.
The following drugs* may have potential interactions with this medication: antidiabetic agents (including insulins), azole antifungals (e.g., itraconazole, ketoconazole), beta blockers (e.g., atenolol, sotalol), corticosteroids (e.g., dexamethasone, prednisone), digoxin, MAOIs (e.g., amitraz, selegiline), oxytocin, phenylpropanolamine (Proin), potassium-depleting diuretics (e.g., furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), and tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline, clomipramine).

Please ensure your veterinarian is aware of all medications and supplements that your pet is currently receiving.
