Protect Your Pet's Paws This Summer: How to Prevent Burns from Hot Pavement

Protect Your Pet's Paws This Summer: How to Prevent Burns from Hot Pavement

Jul 7th 2026

Summer means longer walks, backyard adventures, and plenty of time outdoors with our pets. But while we're slipping on sandals or shoes, our furry friends are walking barefoot on scorching pavement.

Many pet parents don't realize just how quickly asphalt, concrete, and even artificial turf can heat up in the summer sun. Burned paw pads are painful, preventable, and one of the most common warm-weather injuries for dogs.

Here's how to keep your pet's paws safe all summer long.

Why Hot Pavement Is Dangerous

Air temperature doesn't tell the whole story. Surfaces exposed to direct sunlight can become significantly hotter than the air around them.

For example:

  • 77°F air temperature = pavement can reach around 125°F
  • 86°F air temperature = pavement can reach around 135°F
  • 95°F air temperature = pavement can exceed 150°F

At these temperatures, your dog's paw pads can burn in less than a minute.

Black asphalt, concrete sidewalks, parking lots, and synthetic turf all retain heat and can become dangerously hot throughout the day.

Try the 7-Second Test

A simple way to check if it's safe for your pet:

Place the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your pet's paws.

This quick test can help prevent painful burns before your walk even begins.

Signs Your Pet May Have Burned Paw Pads

Watch for these symptoms after spending time outside:

  • Limping or refusing to walk
  • Constant licking or chewing at their paws
  • Darkened, red, or discolored paw pads
  • Blisters or peeling skin
  • Visible cracks or missing pieces of the paw pad
  • Sensitivity when their feet are touched

If your pet has severe burns, bleeding, or difficulty walking, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Tips to Prevent Burned Paws

Walk During Cooler Hours

Plan walks early in the morning or after the sun goes down when surfaces have had time to cool.

Stick to Grass or Shaded Paths

Whenever possible, choose grassy trails, dirt paths, or shaded sidewalks instead of hot asphalt or concrete.

Use Protective Paw Gear

Dog boots provide an extra layer of protection against hot pavement, rough terrain, and sharp debris. If your dog is new to boots, let them practice wearing them indoors before heading outside.

Moisturize Paw Pads

Dry, cracked paw pads are more susceptible to injury. Paw balms help keep pads healthy, hydrated, and protected from harsh summer conditions.

Bring Plenty of Water

Heat affects more than just paws. Always carry fresh water during walks and offer frequent breaks in the shade to help prevent overheating.

Know When to Skip the Walk

On extremely hot days, it's okay to shorten your walk or swap it for indoor enrichment. Puzzle toys, training sessions, sniff mats, or a game of fetch inside can provide both mental and physical stimulation without risking heat-related injuries.

What to Do if Your Pet Burns Their Paws

If you suspect your pet has burned their paw pads:

  • Move them off the hot surface immediately.
  • Gently rinse their paws with cool (not ice-cold) water.
  • Avoid popping blisters or applying human creams unless directed by your veterinarian.
  • Keep the paws clean and limit walking until they can be evaluated.
  • Contact your veterinarian if the burns appear severe or your pet is in significant pain.

Summer Safety Starts from the Ground Up

Protecting your pet during the summer isn't just about keeping them cool—it's also about protecting the paws that carry them through every adventure.

Before heading out, remember to check the pavement, choose cooler walking times, and bring the right gear to keep your best friend comfortable all season long.
