Tips to Help Your Pet Lose Weight

Posted by Feeders Pet Supply on Dec 27th 2022

Let’s face it. We’re all guilty of spoiling our pets with delicious treats and yummy food. Sometimes (or most of the time,) we cave when our pet gives us their best “puppy dog eyes” when they’re begging for just one extra treat. While it’s easy to fall into the temptation of their cuteness, too many treats may lead to obesity and poor health. Lack of physical activity is also a factor to why our pets put on those unwanted pounds. Below we’ve come up with a few tips and tricks to help your pet lose weight to maintain a healthy, long, tail waggin’ life.

Cut Back on Calories

If you are already feeding your pet high quality food and they are still putting on weight, you may be giving your furry friend too many treats. Try to limit your pet’s treat intake to when they do something to earn a reward. We know how hard it can be to not give your pet a treat for just being the cutest boy or girl, but it’s a sacrifice we have to make to ensure our pets stay at a healthy weight. Be sure to let your pet sitter and everyone in the household know of this change as well.

An Apple a Day Keeps the Doc. Away!

While this saying goes for us humans, it is also true for our pets - when done in moderation, that is. Small amounts of healthy “people” food can be a great low-calorie treat to our furry friends. Apple slices, carrots, broccoli and celery are all safe for cats and dogs to enjoy. Contact your vet if you are not sure if a food is healthy to give your pet.

Get Them Up & Moving

There are many benefits of your pet engaging in physical activity every day. Incorporating exercise into your pet’s daily routine will not only keep them in shape but also their mind active. It is recommended that dogs and cats spend an average of 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily. You can introduce your pet to more exercise by taking them on a brisk walk or engaging in playtime. If you have a social pet, try taking them to the park or have them play with other four-legged friends!

Keep Em’ Hydrated

Dog’s brains might trick them into thinking they’re hungry, when actually all they need is water! Be sure to keep your pet’s water bowl filled with clean, fresh water every day to ensure they are getting proper hydration.

If you notice your pet’s weight is out of control and you need some help to maintain it, it is a good idea to consider creating a diet schedule for your pet. If this is the case, contact your veterinarian to get the best plan designed to meet the specific needs of your pet.
