Usage
Itrafungol® should be given as directed by your veterinarian.
Administer with the enclosed dosing syringe. Keep the bottle upright and insert the dosing syringe through the opening of the top of the bottle, DO NOT INVERT BOTTLE. Fill the syringe by pulling the plunger until it reaches the graduation corresponding to the correct mL dose as indicated at the top of the syringe ring. Treat cat by slowly and gently administering liquid into the mouth, allow the cat to swallow. After dosing, the syringe should be removed from the bottle, rinsed and dried and the bottle cap screwed back on tightly. Dose is administered once daily on alternating weeks for 3 treatment cycles. Cats are treated during weeks 1, 3, and 5, and left untreated during weeks 2 and 4. Package insert contains complete instructions.
Missed Doses
Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give 2 doses at once.
Side Effects
Your pet may experience lack of appetite, vomiting, lethargy, weight loss, icterus, elevated total bilirubin and diarrhea may occur. This medication has the potential to increase liver enzymes. If symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting and lack of appetite persist, contact your veterinarian. Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.
Drug & Food Interactions
The following drugs can potentially interact with itraconazole: amphotericin B, antacids, benzodiazepines, buspirone, busulfan, calcium channel blockers, corticosteroids, cyclosporine, digoxin, fentanyl, H2 blockers, ivermectin, macrolide antibiotics, phenobarbital, proton pump inhibitors, rifampin, tricyclic antidepressants, anti-diabetic agents (glipizide, glyburide), and warfarin. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.
Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication you are giving to your pet. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, and a drug interaction may be anticipated. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely.
Cautions
Do not give to cats with hypersensitivity to itraconazole. Has not been shown to be safe in pregnant cats and should only be used when the benefits outweigh the potential risks. Use with caution in cats with renal dysfunction or impaired liver function. Use with caution in cats with impaired liver function and in cats currently being treated with other products that are metabolized by the liver. If clinical signs suggestive of liver dysfunction develop, treatment should be discontinued. Monitor cats suffering from heart disease carefully.
Not for use in humans. Wash hands and exposed skin after use. For person administering product: dermatophytosis is a disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Consult a physician if suspected lesion occurs on a human. Wear protective gloves when handling the animal during treatment or when cleaning the syringe.
Itrafungol® has not been shown to be sporicidal; therefore in order to reduce disease transmission, environmental contamination, and to decrease course of the disease, topical and environmental treatment should also be utilized.
Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform Vetsource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic. Symptoms may include but are not limited to: swollen lips, tongue, face, airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; widespread hives and itching.
