Usage
Osphos® injection should be given to your horse as directed by your veterinarian.
Injections are given intramuscularly, divided evenly into three separate injection sites. Suitable injections sights include the pectoral muscles, the center of lower neck, and hind gluteal muscles. Use aseptic techniques when withdrawing each dose to decrease the possibility of post-injection bacterial infections. Adequately clean and disinfect the stopper prior to entry with a sterile needle and syringe.
Discard unused vial contents, as this is provided as single use vial and does not contain preservative.
Injectable medications require needles and syringes. Those items are purchased separately. Please ask your veterinarian for a recommendation for the correct needle/syringe sizes for your pet. Use only sterile needles/syringes and use each needle/syringe only once. Dispose the needle/syringe immediately in a proper sharps disposal container. Sharps containers are sold separately.
Missed Doses
Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give 2 doses at once.
Side Effects
Most common side effects were signs of discomfort or nervousness, cramping, colic, and/or pawing.
Drug & Food Interactions
The following drugs can potentially interact with Osphos®: aminoglycosides, digoxin, furosemide, phenylbutazone, and tetracyclines. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.
Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication you are giving to your pet. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, and a drug interaction may be anticipated. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely.
Cautions
Keep out of reach of children. Not for human use.
If there is no response to initial therapy, the horse should be re-evaluated. For horses that initially respond to Osphos® but do not maintain clinical improvement for 6 months, Osphos® may be re-administered at 3 to 6 month intervals based on recurrence of clinical signs. For horses that respond to Osphos® and maintain clinical improvements for 6 months, Osphos® should be re-administered after clinical signs recur.
Horses should be monitored for at least 2 hours following administration for signs of colic, agitation, and/or nervous system abnormalities. If a horse appears uncomfortable, nervous, or experiences cramping post-treatment it is advised to hand walk the horse for 15 minutes until signs resolve. Contact the veterinarian if the horse displays abnormal clinical signs.
Osphos® should not be used in pregnant or lactating mares, or mares intended for breeding. The safe use of Osphos® has not been evaluated in horses less than 4 years of age.
Use of Osphos® in patients with conditions affecting renal function or mineral or electrolyte homeostasis is not recommended.
Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform VetSource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your pet experiences an allergic reaction to the medication, signs may include facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma. If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic.
