Usage
Prednisone Tablets should be given orally as directed by your veterinarian.
This medication is given preferably with or after a meal. If your pet vomits or appears unwell after receiving a dose on an empty stomach, give future doses with food. If vomiting continues, contact your veterinarian.
Do not discontinue this medication abruptly, especially if your pet has been taking this medication for two or more weeks. Administer only as prescribed and consult your veterinarian prior to discontinuing this drug.
Missed Doses
Administer the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include (but are not limited to): excessive thirst, urination, and appetite. Other reported side effects include dull/dry haircoat, weight gain, panting, GI effects (vomiting, diarrhea, GI ulceration), muscle wasting, and behavioral changes (e.g., depression, lethargy, viciousness).
Side effects with this medication are often linked to high doses and/or prolonged use but may still occur during short-term therapy. Your veterinarian may give specific dosing instructions or frequency to help avoid or lessen these effects.
Notify your veterinarian if the effects described above or any other side effects appear and become persistent or troublesome. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.
Contact your veterinarian immediately if your pet stops eating, displays an atypically low energy level, experiences bloody vomiting, or has black, tarry stools.
Drug & Food Interactions
The following medications may have potential interactions with this medication (but may not be a comprehensive list): antidiabetic agents (including insulin), antihypertensives, azole antifungals, (concurrent) corticosteroids, cyclosporine, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, NSAIDs, and phenobarbital.
Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.
Please ensure your veterinarian is aware of all medications and supplements that your pet is currently receiving. Your veterinarian may prescribe multiple medications, even if a potential drug interaction may occur. In these instances, your veterinarian may adjust the dosage(s) or monitor your pet more closely.
Cautions
While this medication does not have an FDA-approved indication for animal use, it is a common and acceptable practice for veterinarians to prescribe this human medication for use in animals.
Do not use this medication if your pet has a current systemic fungal or viral infection, demodectic mange, hyperadrenocorticism, or active corneal/GI ulceration.
Use with caution in animals with preexisting congestive heart failure, hypertension, osteoporosis, kidney or liver disease, and/or bleeding disorders.
Steroid medications can weaken your pet's immune system, making it easier for them to get an infection (or worsen an existing one). Do not administer a "live" vaccine while using prednisone.
Notify your veterinarian if your pet is breeding, pregnant or nursing; they may adjust the dosage or monitor your pet more frequently while taking this medication.
Do not administer to animals with known history or suspected allergy/hypersensitivity to this medication or any of its ingredients. Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform Vetsource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies.
If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, discontinue therapy and call your veterinarian immediately or seek emergency veterinary attention. Symptoms may include (but are not limited to): swollen lips, tongue, face, or airways, difficulty breathing, agitation, profuse salivation, and widespread hives or itching.
