Spironolactone
Usage
Spironolactone should be given orally as directed by your veterinarian. Wash hands after handling this medication.
Missed Doses
Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include (but are not limited to): decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration/excessive thirst, drowsiness, weakness, and diminished urination in relation to fluid intake. Notify your veterinarian if side effects appear and remain troublesome.
In rare cases, facial dermatitis has occurred in cats on this medication. If this is observed, contact your veterinarian.
Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.
Drug & Food Interactions
The following medications have been noted to have potential interactions with spironolactone (but may not be a comprehensive list): ACE inhibitors (e.g., enalapril, benazepril), Angiotensin receptor blockers (e.g., telmisartan), beta blockers, desoxycorticosterone pivalate, digoxin, NSAIDs, potassium supplements, and salicylates (e.g., aspirin). Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.
Ensure your veterinarian is aware of all medications and/or supplements you are giving to your pet. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, even if a potential drug interaction may occur. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely.
Cautions
While this medication does not have an FDA-approved indication for animal use, it is a common and acceptable practice for veterinarians to prescribe this human medication for use in animals.
Do not use in pets with high potassium levels, Addison’s disease, acute kidney injury, or significant renal impairment.
Use with caution in pets with history of renal or liver impairment.
Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform Vetsource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies.
If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, discontinue therapy and call your veterinarian immediately or seek emergency veterinary attention. Symptoms may include (but are not limited to): swollen lips, tongue, face, or airways, difficulty breathing, agitation, profuse salivation, and widespread hives or itching.
Human Exposure Warning
This medication may present a hazard to males or females who are actively trying to conceive, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and women who are breast feeding, because it may be present in breast milk. Unopened, intact tablets and capsules may not pose the same degree of risk as injectable drugs that usually require extensive preparation. Cutting, crushing, or otherwise manipulating tablets and capsules will increase the risk of exposure. Wear gloves while handling this medication. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling this medication.
Adverse Reactions
If you are concerned that your pet has experienced an adverse reaction to this medication, please contact Vetsource customer service at 877-738-4443.
