Usage
Amitriptyline should be given orally as directed by your veterinarian. Do not stop giving the medication unless advised by your veterinarian. Try to give this medication at about the same time each day.
Medications alone may not solve behavioral problems and may be combined with behavioral modification techniques recommended by your veterinarian or animal behaviorist. 
Missed Doses
Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give 2 doses at once.
Side Effects
Side effects may include lethargy, dry mouth, urine retention, constipation and a faster heart rate. Your pet may experience some excitement, disorientation, hyperactivity and stomach upset. Other noted symptoms include seizures, tremors and irregular heartbeat. If these symptoms persist, contact your veterinarian.

Drug & Food Interactions
The following drugs can potentially interact with amitriptyline: amitraz, selegiline, barbiturates, sedatives, epinephrine, norepinephrine, ketoconazole, SSRIs, tramadol, antithyroid drugs (medicine for an over active thyroid), and cimetidine. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.
Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication or supplements you are giving to your pet. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, even if a drug interaction may occur. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely. 
Cautions
This medication does not have an FDA approved indication for use in animals, but it is a common and acceptable practice for veterinarians to prescribe this human medication for use in animals.
Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform Vetsource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic. Symptoms may include but are not limited to: swollen lips, tongue, face, airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; vomiting; widespread hives and itching.

Storage
Store at 68°F to 77°F in controlled room temperature, excursions permitted between 59°F to 86°F. Keep this medicine out of reach of children. Store in a childproof container. Store this medicine in a cool, dry place at room temperature. Store away from heat and direct sunlight. Do not store this medicine in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink or in damp places. The medicine may break down if exposed to heat or moisture.
